Albany’s harbour has witnessed whaling ships, convict transports, wartime departures and thousands of years of Noongar history. The Museum of the Great Southern uses this coastal setting to tell the story of the Great Southern region of Western Australia and the people who have shaped it. Its collections bring together Aboriginal cultural material, natural history specimens, maritime objects, photographs and everyday belongings. Exhibitions explore Noongar culture and Country alongside European settlement, whaling, migration and Albany’s role in the First World War, connecting the region’s deep past with the communities living there today.
