Grasse has been associated with perfume production for centuries, and the Musée International de la Parfumerie documents the craft’s development across cultures and historical periods. Opened in 1989 and expanded in 2008, the museum explores the history of fragrances through the raw materials, techniques, objects and industries involved in making and using perfume. Its collections include perfume bottles, decorative arts, textiles, archaeological finds and industrial equipment from around the world. The displays also examine soap, makeup and cosmetics, showing how scents have been used for personal care, communication and attraction. A multisensory approach connects the history of perfume with the science, design and commercial practices behind the industry.
