MarseilleProvence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur/France

A modern lattice of concrete surrounds the Mucem’s J4 building at the entrance to Marseille’s Old Port, facing the Mediterranean Sea. Opened in 2013, the Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée explores the history and cultures of Europe and the Mediterranean through anthropology, archaeology, history and contemporary art. The museum extends across three sites: the J4 building, the historic Fort Saint-Jean and a conservation and resource centre in the Belle de Mai district. Its collections include more than 350,000 objects, alongside photographs and documentary materials, presented through permanent and temporary exhibitions that examine the connections between Mediterranean societies, past and present.
