Housed in the 18th-century Hôtel de Clapiers-Cabris in Grasse, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Provence explores the history and everyday life of eastern Provence. The mansion was transformed into a museum by François Carnot, and the institution first opened in 1921 under the name Musée Fragonard before taking its current name in 1979. Its collections span archaeology, fine and decorative arts, and regional traditions. Paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, glassware, textiles, jewellery, weapons and everyday objects illustrate how people in Provence lived across different periods, from prehistoric times to the first half of the 20th century. The historic mansion retains its arrangement of formal reception rooms and private spaces, with displays overlooking the garden.
