Follow the cocoa bean from ancient cultures to the chocolate bar in your hand at Cologne’s Schokoladenmuseum. Opened in 1993 on the Rhine, the museum explores 5,000 years of cocoa and chocolate, from its origins in the Americas to modern production. The journey combines cultural history with a tropical greenhouse, historic machinery and a glass chocolate factory where production can be watched up close. And then there is the three-metre chocolate fountain, holding 200 kilograms of chocolate for visitors to taste. The museum also explores colonial history, trade and sustainability alongside the sweeter side of chocolate.
