A striking red-sandstone building designed by Philip Johnson has been shaping Bielefeld’s cultural landscape since 1968. The Kunsthalle Bielefeld was Johnson’s only museum building in Europe and combines modernist principles with an early move towards postmodern architecture. Inside, the museum focuses on modern and contemporary art, with a collection spanning German Expressionism, Constructivism, Bauhaus, American and German art of the 1970s and 1980s, and contemporary works. Changing exhibitions bring historical and contemporary positions into new conversations, while a sculpture park extends the museum into the surrounding city.
