DuisburgNordrhein-Westfalen/Germany

A former grain mill on Duisburg’s Inner Harbour now houses one of Germany’s leading museums for post-war and contemporary art. The Museum Küppersmühle was transformed from an industrial warehouse into a museum by Herzog & de Meuron in 1999, retaining its distinctive red-brick façade while introducing spacious white galleries. The museum is home to the Ströher Collection, one of the most important collections of German art after 1945, with a strong focus on painting. Works by Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, K.O. Götz and other major artists trace the development of German art from the 1950s to the present. A 2021 extension added new galleries and opened the historic grain silos to visitors.
