Cologne Cathedral, the Rhine and a remarkable collection of modern art come together at Museum Ludwig in the heart of Cologne. Founded in 1976 following a major donation from collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig, the museum moved into its distinctive building beside the cathedral in 1986. The collection covers 20th- and 21st-century art, with exceptional strengths in Pop Art, Picasso, German Expressionism, Russian avant-garde and photography. Highlights include works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter and Alexander Rodchenko. Its Pop Art collection is the largest in Europe, while its Picasso collection is among the largest in the world.
