Museum Brandhorst

A colourful façade of 36,000 ceramic rods makes Museum Brandhorst one of Munich’s most distinctive art museums. Designed by Sauerbruch Hutton and opened in 2009, the building forms part of the Kunstareal, Munich’s museum quarter, alongside the Pinakotheken and other major cultural institutions. Inside, the museum presents the Brandhorst Collection, with more than 2,000 works spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. The collection has particular strengths in American art from the 1960s onward, including more than 120 works by Andy Warhol. Its greatest highlight is Europe’s largest collection of works by Cy Twombly, including the monumental *Lepanto* cycle, displayed in a gallery designed specifically for the series.
