Step into one of Europe’s great collections of Old Master paintings, housed in Munich since 1836. The Alte Pinakothek brings together more than 700 works from the 14th to the 18th century, including masterpieces by Dürer, Raphael, Rubens, Rembrandt, Leonardo da Vinci and many others. Built for King Ludwig I of Bavaria by architect Leo von Klenze, the museum was once considered one of the largest museum buildings in the world. Heavily damaged during the Second World War, it was rebuilt in a striking post-war form that leaves parts of the original destruction visible in the brickwork.
