A grand 19th-century artist’s villa is the setting for one of Munich’s most important collections of modern art. Built for painter Franz von Lenbach, the Lenbachhaus became a municipal museum in 1929 and was later expanded with a striking modern wing designed by Foster + Partners. Its defining treasure is the world’s largest collection of works by the Blue Rider, the avant-garde group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Paintings by Gabriele Münter, Paul Klee and other members reveal the movement’s radical approach to colour and abstraction. The collection also spans Munich’s 19th-century art, New Objectivity, post-war modernism and contemporary art.
