The Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York City, is dedicated to the life and work of Japanese American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi. Its collection includes sculptures in stone, wood and metal, furniture, drawings, architectural models, stage designs and the iconic Akari light sculptures. The displays explore Noguchi’s work across art, design and landscape architecture. Founded by Noguchi himself and opened in 1985, the museum occupies a converted industrial building near the East River. The artist designed the museum to bring his work together with an outdoor sculpture garden, where stone sculptures sit among carefully arranged plants and pathways. The combination of indoor galleries and garden reflects Noguchi’s belief that art and its surroundings are closely connected.
