Sovereign Hill

Step into Ballarat’s gold-rush era at Sovereign Hill, an open-air museum where the streets, shops and businesses of a 19th-century mining town have been brought back to life. Costumed characters, working trades and historic buildings make the site feel more like a living town than a conventional museum. Visitors can try panning for gold, watch blacksmiths and other craftspeople at work, enter underground mines and explore shops filled with period goods. The site also tells the less romantic side of the gold rush, including the experiences of migrants, First Nations people and workers whose lives were shaped by Ballarat’s sudden transformation.
