Some of Italy’s most famous paintings hang in a former convent in the heart of Milan. The Pinacoteca di Brera grew from Napoleon’s decision to gather major religious paintings from across northern Italy, turning Brera into a showcase for works that could be studied by artists and the public. The collection is particularly strong in Italian painting, with masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, Mantegna, Bellini and Piero della Francesca. The galleries trace the development of art in Lombardy and beyond, while the historic setting, the nearby Brera Academy and the museum’s restoration workshops make Brera part of Milan’s artistic story rather than simply a place to see paintings.
