The Philadelphia Museum of Art is instantly recognizable for its monumental steps overlooking Benjamin Franklin Parkway, but the museum itself is far more than its famous entrance. Opened in 1928, the Beaux-Arts building houses one of the largest art collections in the United States, spanning thousands of years and cultures. Its galleries range from ancient Mediterranean objects and medieval armour to European and American paintings, Asian art, modern design and contemporary works. Highlights include Van Gogh’s *Sunflowers*, Marcel Duchamp’s *Large Glass* and works by Monet, Picasso and Cézanne. The museum also includes the Rodin Museum and historic houses in Fairmount Park.
