DunkerqueHauts-de-France/France
In May and June 1940, Dunkirk became the scene of Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of Allied soldiers trapped by German forces on the French coast. The Musée Dunkerque 1940 – Opération Dynamo is housed in Bastion 32, a military fortification built in 1874 that served as the headquarters for French and Allied forces during the battle. Through wartime photographs, military maps, uniforms, weapons, vehicles and personal objects, the museum recounts the Battle of Dunkirk and the evacuation of more than 338,000 Allied soldiers to Britain in nine days. Its exhibitions also cover the German occupation of Dunkirk and the city's liberation, preserving the experiences of soldiers and civilians during the Second World War.
