Hospice Comtesse Museum

A medieval hospital became a window into Lille’s past at the Hospice Comtesse Museum. Founded in 1237 by Jeanne, Countess of Flanders, the former charitable institution cared for the sick and poor for centuries before becoming a museum. The surviving buildings preserve a remarkable mix of Gothic, Renaissance and 17th-century architecture, including a chapel, sickroom and communal spaces. Inside, paintings, furniture, ceramics, textiles and everyday objects reveal how people lived in Lille from the Middle Ages onwards. The museum also explores the history of the hospice itself, making the building as important to the visit as the collection.
