From an early calculating machine to one of the first aircraft, the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris traces the history of scientific and technical invention. Founded in 1794 as the Conservatoire des arts et métiers, the institution began collecting machines, instruments and models to preserve technical knowledge and encourage innovation. Housed in the former priory of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, the museum presents its collections across seven themes: scientific instruments, materials, construction, communication, energy, mechanics and transport. Highlights include Blaise Pascal’s calculating machine, the Chappe telegraph and Clément Ader’s Avion III. The collection spans centuries of engineering and scientific development, showing how inventions have changed the way people live and work.
