The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia, grew from the private collection of Walter P. Chrysler Jr., whose passion for art turned the museum into one of the region’s major cultural institutions. Opened in its current building in 1933, the museum has since expanded its galleries and programmes while remaining free to the public. Its collection spans more than 5,000 years, from ancient Egyptian and Roman objects to European and American art, modernism and contemporary works. Highlights include paintings by Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Rubens, Monet and Picasso, alongside an important glass collection featuring works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The museum also operates the nearby Perry Glass Studio.
