Bad BentheimNiedersachsen/Germany
Burg Bentheim is a historic hilltop castle in Bad Bentheim, Germany, near the Dutch border. It is the largest hilltop castle in northwest Germany, with its earliest documented mention dating to 1050. The castle has been owned by the Counts and Princes of Bentheim and Steinfurt for around five centuries. The castle complex includes the Powder Tower, Crown Castle, Battery Tower, carriage house and St Catherine’s Church, with exhibitions covering the history of the castle, the Bentheim ruling family and the region. Visitors can also learn about Bentheim sandstone, which was quarried locally for centuries and used in historic buildings throughout the Netherlands and Germany.
