Beneath Berlin’s streets lies a hidden layer of bunkers, tunnels and forgotten infrastructure that tells another side of the city’s history. Berliner Unterwelten e.V. researches, documents and preserves these underground sites, making many of them accessible through guided tours and exhibitions. The tours explore subjects ranging from civilian air-raid shelters during the Second World War to Cold War bunkers, escape tunnels beneath the Berlin Wall and Berlin’s early underground infrastructure. The Unterwelten-Museum at Gesundbrunnen adds exhibitions about the city’s subterranean history, while sites such as the Fichtebunker reveal layers of Berlin’s past far beyond the surface.
