A 76-metre submarine sits in Bremerhaven’s museum harbour, offering a rare chance to step inside one of the most advanced submarines of the Second World War. Originally built as U-2540, the Type XXI boat was scuttled by its crew in 1945, salvaged in 1957 and later served with the German Navy as the Wilhelm Bauer. Today, the entire submarine forms the museum. Narrow passageways, original equipment and cramped crew spaces show what life aboard was like, while the boat’s design reveals how dramatically submarine technology had changed by the end of the war. It is the only surviving Type XXI submarine that can be visited.
