A staircase lined with thousands of weapons rises through the Hall of Steel at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. Opened in 1996, the museum houses much of the United Kingdom’s national collection of arms and armour, tracing how weapons, protection and military technology developed across centuries and cultures. The galleries range from medieval knights and royal tournaments to modern warfare, Asian weaponry and personal self-defence. Highlights include a full suit of armour for an elephant, ornate armour associated with European royalty and weapons from around the world. Live combat demonstrations bring historical fighting techniques to life, showing how these objects were used rather than simply displayed.
