The Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., is a branch of the Smithsonian American Art Museum dedicated to contemporary craft and decorative arts. Housed in a historic Second Empire building completed in 1859, it was originally designed as an art gallery and is named after architect James Renwick Jr. The gallery presents large-scale installations, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, glass and other forms of contemporary craft. Its exhibitions often transform the historic interior, placing ambitious works in dialogue with the building’s ornate architecture. The Renwick is particularly known for highlighting innovative American artists working across traditional craft disciplines.
