The Arts and Industries Building in Washington, D.C., is the Smithsonian Institution’s oldest purpose-built museum. Opened in 1881, the Victorian building was designed to showcase objects from the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and helped establish the Smithsonian as a national museum. The building has hosted collections ranging from natural history and technology to cultural objects and historic artefacts. After periods of closure and restoration, it is now used for special exhibitions and Smithsonian programs rather than a permanent collection. Its grand central rotunda and historic architecture remain highlights of the National Mall.
