Palazzo Barberini in Rome, Italy, houses a major collection of European paintings dating from the 13th to the 18th century. Highlights include Raphael’s *La Fornarina*, Caravaggio’s *Judith Beheading Holofernes* and works by Filippo Lippi, Hans Holbein and Guido Reni. The collection traces the development of Italian and European painting across several centuries. Built for Pope Urban VIII and his family in the 17th century, the palace is a landmark of Roman Baroque architecture. Carlo Maderno began the design, with Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini also contributing to the building. Its grand halls, monumental staircases and Pietro da Cortona’s ceiling fresco, *The Triumph of Divine Providence*, are highlights in their own right.
