The Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas and one of the city’s most important churches. Founded in the 5th century, it is renowned for its remarkable mosaics, richly decorated chapels and a blend of early Christian, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The basilica is particularly famous for its ancient mosaics depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, as well as its magnificent coffered ceiling. Beneath the main altar lies the traditional relics of the Holy Crib, while the basilica also contains the tomb of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Together, its art, architecture and long history make Santa Maria Maggiore one of Rome’s most remarkable religious landmarks.
