The National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., explores the people, events and ideas that have shaped the United States. Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the museum opened in 1964 and cares for more than 1.8 million objects spanning American political, social, cultural and technological history. Visitors can see iconic objects including the original Star-Spangled Banner, Abraham Lincoln’s top hat and the first ladies’ inaugural gowns. Exhibitions cover subjects ranging from transportation and innovation to entertainment, military history and everyday American life, offering a broad look at the country’s changing identity.
