The National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., is part of the Smithsonian Institution and focuses on the artistic traditions of Africa and its global connections. Founded in 1964, it became part of the Smithsonian in 1979 and was the first U.S. museum dedicated exclusively to African art. Its collection includes more than 13,000 objects spanning ancient to contemporary periods, with sculpture, textiles, jewellery, ceramics, paintings and photography from across the continent. Exhibitions explore African artistic traditions alongside themes such as identity, spirituality, history and contemporary life.
