At the National Coal Mining Museum for England in West Yorkshire, the story of coal is told on the site of a former working colliery. Original mine buildings, towering machinery and the remains of the industrial landscape show how coal production shaped Britain and the communities built around it. Exhibitions explore miners’ working lives, family life and the changes brought by new technology. The museum’s Time Tunnel uses film and immersive effects to travel through mining history, while the grounds include a miners’ memorial garden, woodland trails and historic pit buildings. Underground tours led by former miners are a signature experience, although these are currently paused while the museum reviews its tour programme.
