The National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., traces the history of aviation and space exploration through one of the world’s largest collections of historic aircraft and spacecraft. Part of the Smithsonian Institution, the museum opened in 1976 and has become one of the most visited museums in the United States. Visitors can see landmark objects including the 1903 Wright Flyer, Charles Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis and the Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia. Exhibitions explore the development of flight, space exploration, planetary science and the technology that made some of humanity’s most significant journeys possible.
