The MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) explores Antwerp’s connections with the wider world through the history of its port, international trade, migration, art and cultural exchange. Opened in 2011 in the city’s former harbour district, the museum brings together collections from Antwerp’s history and maritime heritage with objects and stories from Europe, Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. Designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, the building rises like a stack of historic warehouses, with red sandstone and glass galleries arranged in a spiralling tower. A public boulevard winds past the exhibition spaces to a rooftop panorama overlooking Antwerp and its harbour. The museum’s collection includes around 600,000 objects, with a selection displayed in exhibitions and a visible storage galler
