The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid presents a broad history of Western painting, from medieval art to the late 20th century. Its collection includes works by artists such as Van Eyck, Dürer, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso and Hopper, with strong representation of movements including the Renaissance, Impressionism and German Expressionism. The museum opened in 1992 in the Palacio de Villahermosa, an 18th-century palace redesigned by architect Rafael Moneo. An extension completed in 2004 added neighbouring historic buildings to accommodate more exhibition space, including works from the Carmen Thyssen Collection. The museum forms part of Madrid’s famous Art Triangle, alongside the Prado and Reina Sofía.
