Set in the remains of a château in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, the Musée national de Préhistoire documents more than 400,000 years of human presence in the Vézère Valley and beyond. Founded in 1913 through the work of prehistorian Denis Peyrony, the museum preserves archaeological discoveries from one of France’s richest regions for prehistoric research. Its collections include stone and bone tools, human remains, animal fossils, jewellery and prehistoric art. Displays follow the development of prehistoric cultures, showing how people adapted to changing environments, made tools, used shelters and expressed themselves through art and burial practices. The museum also serves as a research centre for the study of prehistory.
