The Montclair Art Museum was founded in 1914 with an unusual ambition for its time: to display American art alongside art created by Indigenous peoples of North America. Located in Montclair, New Jersey, it continues to bring these traditions into conversation through historic objects, contemporary works and changing exhibitions. Its collection includes more than 14,000 works, from American landscape paintings and prints to Indigenous basketry, beadwork, pottery and regalia. A particular strength is its collection of Native art, which includes works by artists from many Indigenous nations, past and present. Through exhibitions and collaborations with Indigenous artists and communities, the museum explores how art connects with identity, history, land and cultural continuity.
