A woolly mammoth named Wool-I-Am is one of the familiar faces of Ipswich Museum, where natural history meets the story of a changing town. Founded in 1846, the museum grew from local scientific collections into a wide-ranging institution covering archaeology, wildlife, world cultures and the history of Ipswich. Its collections include taxidermy animals, archaeological finds and objects from around the world. The museum’s Victorian building is undergoing a major redevelopment, with new galleries designed to bring its collections to life and tell more inclusive stories about the town and its communities.
