The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston has presented experimental and contemporary art since 1948, when it was founded as the Boston chapter of the Museum of Modern Art. After several moves, the ICA settled on Boston’s waterfront in 2006 in a building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, whose cantilevered galleries overlook the harbour. Rather than a fixed historical collection, the museum focuses on contemporary artists and ideas through changing exhibitions, commissions and performances. Its programme spans painting, sculpture, photography, film, installation and performance, with works by both established and emerging artists.
