A real German U-505 submarine, a towering indoor tornado and a historic coal mine are among the experiences waiting at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Opened in 1933, the museum occupies the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. Its galleries turn science and technology into hands-on experiences, covering subjects such as space, transport, energy, the human body and the natural world. Visitors can explore a captured Second World War submarine, experiment with the forces behind storms and descend into a recreated coal mine. The museum combines historic machines and engineering with interactive exhibits that invite visitors to investigate how things work.
