Den Gamle By in Aarhus is an open-air museum where Danish urban life from different periods is brought together in a historic town setting. Founded in 1914, it was the world’s first open-air museum of urban history and now includes more than 75 historic buildings from across Denmark. Visitors can walk through streets, houses, shops and workshops representing life from the 1700s to the 1970s. Costumed staff bring different periods to life, while exhibitions explore Danish everyday life, crafts and social history. Highlights include the 19th-century town, a 1927 neighbourhood and a 1974 district filled with authentic interiors and businesses.
