Beneath the streets of Westminster lies the underground command centre where Winston Churchill and his government directed Britain’s war effort during the Second World War. The Churchill War Rooms preserve the cramped offices, corridors and meeting rooms where ministers and military staff worked through years of conflict. The Map Room remains arranged as it was when the lights were switched off in August 1945, with maps and charts still in place. Nearby, the Churchill Museum explores the prime minister’s life and legacy through personal objects, documents and multimedia displays, adding the story of one man to the history of the wartime bunker.
