Comics, animation and cartoons get the museum treatment at San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum. Founded in 1984, the institution has spent more than four decades preserving and exhibiting the art behind comic strips, graphic novels, editorial cartoons and animated films. Its collection contains more than 9,000 original works, including animation cels, comic book pages, concept art and newspaper strips from artists such as Charles Schulz, Bill Watterson, Jack Kirby and Winsor McCay. The museum’s galleries closed in August 2026 as it prepares for its next chapter, but its collection and programme continue beyond its former Beach Street location.
