The Contarelli Chapel is a famous chapel inside the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, best known for three masterpieces by the Baroque painter Caravaggio. Commissioned at the end of the 16th century, the chapel is dedicated to Saint Matthew and features scenes from his life painted with Caravaggio’s dramatic use of light and shadow. The three paintings — The Calling of Saint Matthew, The Inspiration of Saint Matthew and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew — are among Caravaggio’s most celebrated works. Their naturalistic figures, intense lighting and emotional scenes helped establish a new direction in Baroque painting. The chapel remains a popular destination for visitors exploring Rome’s artistic heritage.
