The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is one of Rome’s oldest churches and a landmark in the historic Trastevere neighbourhood. Founded in the 3rd century and rebuilt several times, the basilica is particularly famous for its magnificent medieval mosaics, including the celebrated 12th-century scenes on the façade and in the apse. Inside, visitors can admire the richly decorated interior, ancient columns and numerous works of art from different periods. The basilica’s peaceful atmosphere, beautiful mosaics and long history make it one of the most remarkable churches to visit in Rome.
