A wall of names, a military museum and a national memorial come together at Canberra’s Australian War Memorial. Opened in 1941, it commemorates Australians who have served or died in war while preserving objects and stories from conflicts stretching from the colonial era to the present. Aircraft hang above galleries filled with tanks, uniforms, weapons, photographs and personal belongings. Among the collection are a Japanese midget submarine from the attack on Sydney Harbour and aircraft flown by Australian forces. The Roll of Honour and Hall of Memory give the site a more personal dimension, placing individual lives alongside the machinery and history of war.
