Auckland War Memorial Museum brings together the natural and cultural history of Aotearoa New Zealand with stories of those who served in its wars. Housed in a monumental neoclassical building overlooking Auckland’s Domain, the museum opened in 1929 as a memorial to New Zealand’s First World War dead. Its collections cover Māori and Pacific cultures, natural history, decorative arts and New Zealand’s military past. Carved meeting houses, taonga, volcanic specimens and military objects appear alongside personal stories, uniforms and aircraft. The museum’s Māori and Pacific galleries are particularly significant, with extensive collections of carvings, weapons, textiles and other cultural treasures.
