Auckland Art Gallery

Auckland’s main art museum brings together more than 700 years of art beneath one roof, from European masters to Māori and Pacific artists. Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki opened in 1888 as New Zealand’s first purpose-built public art gallery and has since grown into the country’s largest art collection. The galleries range from historic paintings and portraits to modern and contemporary works, with New Zealand art at the centre of the collection. Māori and Pacific perspectives sit alongside international artists, while the building itself combines a restored French Renaissance-style structure with a striking contemporary extension designed by Australian architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp.
