A giant spiral staircase cuts through the heart of one of Toronto’s most recognisable art spaces. The Art Gallery of Ontario brings together centuries of art inside a building that has been repeatedly transformed, most dramatically by Frank Gehry’s 2008 redesign. More than 120,000 works range from European masterpieces and Canadian art to photography, contemporary art and Indigenous works. The collection includes paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Gogh, alongside major works by Canadian artists such as Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven. The result is a museum where Canadian art and international art meet under one roof.
