The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, is centred around five original Viking ships discovered in Roskilde Fjord. The ships were deliberately sunk around 1070 to block the fjord and protect the medieval city from attack. The museum explores the maritime world of the Vikings through archaeological finds, exhibitions and reconstructed vessels. Visitors can see the original ships in the museum hall and, during the sailing season, experience full-scale reconstructions on the fjord. The museum’s boatyard also demonstrates traditional Nordic boatbuilding, keeping ancient maritime techniques alive.
