Santorini’s famous cherry tomatoes once powered an entire local industry. At the Tomato Industrial Museum D. Nomikos in Vlychada, a former factory preserves the story of how the island’s small, flavourful tomatoes were processed into tomato paste and shipped to markets beyond Greece. The factory operated from 1945 until 1981, when declining tomato cultivation on Santorini led to its closure. Reopened as a museum in 2014, the site displays historic machinery, tools and other objects from the production process, alongside stories about the workers and agricultural traditions that shaped the island. It offers a glimpse of a side of Santorini that existed long before tourism became its main industry.
