Seven centuries of European art come together under one roof at Frankfurt’s Städel Museum. Founded in 1815 by banker and collector Johann Friedrich Städel, it is Germany’s oldest museum foundation and one of the country’s most important art museums. The collection ranges from medieval and Renaissance masterpieces to modern and contemporary art, with works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Monet, Picasso, Beckmann and Richter. Alongside its paintings and sculptures, the museum holds major collections of prints and drawings and more than 5,000 photographs. Its permanent exhibition offers a broad journey through 700 years of art history.
